January 4, 2025 - Tour of Cartagena, continued

 The tour continues...enjoy the photos.

Another store selling paintings in Getsemani.

Colors are everywhere.

We stopped to see the statue of the shoes.  This is the cement floor in the plaza.  It is an optical illusion and I found it a bit hard to walk at first.

The statue called "Old Boots" is in honor of Luis Carlos Lopez, a famous poet.

I opted not to climb into one of the boots to have my photo taken.

The Old City of Cartagena is surrounded by 11 km of fortress walls. They were built in 1586 to protect from foreign invasions and pirate attacks.

This is the dry season but we've had rain every afternoon.  There were occasional huge puddles left from yesterday's downpour.

Next we left the Old City and headed to Pie de la Popa.  We didn't walk around the Old City but I'll be doing that regularly while I'm here and will post photos.

On the narrow road to Popa Hill.  Originally a convent and church were built on the highest hill in the area.  Along this road are the stations of the cross.

The views are amazing.

That's Bocagrande.  I can see my building!

Juan Carlos said this used to have a top.  But now doesn't.  I don't know what's sticking up out of it but it looked like cement and would cause some serious damage if you hit it.

This is called the elephant leg tree.

Elephant "toes".

Everywhere you go, there are tourists.  They are the backbone of the economy so Cartagena works hard to keep the tourist areas (like Bocagrande, Getsemani, Manga and the Old City) safe.

The pegasus statues.

More of the fortress wall.

The wall is very thick.

I remembered this area - under the arches they sell candy.  Lots of vendors, lots of sweets.  I'll be going back to shop.

We stopped at Juan Carlos' favorite place to get ceviche but it wasn't ready and I didn't want to wait for 30 minutes.  Instead I went home to figure out what to do for lunch.  I wanted to try Rappi (Colombian version of Uber Eats).  It took me a minute but I figured it out and ordered 1/2 roasted chicken.  It came with two small salted/baked potatoes.

A chicken thigh and potato.  This is from Kokorico, a local fast food place.  Their roasted chicken was better than I make at home.  I don't know what spices they use but it was so juicy and delicious.

While I ate, the clouds came in.

So far, this trip has been excellent.  Cartagena is everything I remembered and more.  How nice to be surprised tonight with fireworks.

  1. The umbrellas over the streets (alleys?) are the best, but quite a few other pictures showed pennants; also flag-sized horizontal cloths (w ads?); strings of flowers? Love the idea but clearly the streets need to be narrow.

    1. The streets, built before cars, are very narrow. I'm not sure why one street was covered with pennants for Johnny Walker. But it is all festive and colorful.
