Disappointment

I'm a bit sad right now.  I had a Skype interview this morning with an American company who runs English schools in China.  I thought I surpassed all the qualifications.

We started with the basics of what is needed to get a work visa in RPC.  Degree?  Yes.  Two years teaching experience.  Check.  Under the age of 54?  Damn.

Getting a job in the USA is tough now, I know.  But we should never take for granted the protections we have.  I've worked in South American countries where it is perfectly legal and appropriate for criteria for a receptionist, for example to include "Must be beautiful and between the ages of 21 and 24."

Many countries have mandatory retirement ages and won't allow workers into their countries who are older.  I understand it.  I just don't like it.

My birth certificate and the mirror may say I'm in my 60's but I feel like a 23 year old with lots of experience.

  1. Mark and I are sorry for your disappointment, but sure that there is life after Samoa! Not trying to make light of your situation, but maybe something will open up in New Zealand or Australia. If all else fails, there's still your home in FL. Love ya, Terre
